TOASTING THE TIGER

Southern Living Magazine, April 2009
PEOPLE & PLACES peach page .....

Besides winning awards in tasting contests, wineries often measure success by what top-tier establishments pour their vintages. Tiger Mountain Vineyards of Northeast Georgia supplies the finest restaurants in Atlanta, including Bacchanalia, Quinones, The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead, Woodfire Grill and the Floataway Cafe. It also stocks the Beach Bar at the Cloister on Sea Island. Look for Tiger wines at other fine eateries, from Harry Bissett's Bayou Grill in Athens, to Grits Cafe in Forsyth.

Tiger Mountain Vineyards is nestled on a hillside high up in Rabun County, on the rocky, sunny slopes of the North Georgia mountains. Our vineyard is small, the vines individually tended and the grapes hand-picked for quality. Our red wines are barrel-aged 18 to 24 months. Visit the vineyards and enjoy barrel-room tastings!

About Tiger Mountain Vineyards

A deep respect for the land and the cultivation of fine fruit.
The first vineyards at Tiger Mountain were planted on the five-generation-old Ezzard farm in Northeast Georgia in 1995, and the first vintages date to 1999. The 2,000-foot altitude, cool mountain nights and well-drained slopes, which consist of the decayed granite soils of the ancient Blue Ridge, are an ideal terroir for certain European vinifera and the native American Norton. A divided trellis system prevents excessive canopy, allowing sunlight and movement of air though the vines. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine is made using traditional European small winery methods in the fermentation, barrel aging and blending processes.

The vinifera grapes cultivated at Tiger are carefully selected French and Portuguese reds--Cabernet Franc, Touriga Nacional, Tannat, Malbec, Mourvedre as well as the native American Norton; white grapes are Viognier and the rare Petit Manseng. The award winning wines are sold in Georgia's major cities and are listed in top restaurants, including four five stars.

Tiger Mountain Vineyards (www.tigerwine.com/) takes pride in its handcrafted wines which reflect a deep respect for this unique land and its fruit.

DIRECTIONS
From Atlanta, non-rush hour travel time is one hour and 45 minutes.

I-85 North to Hwy 985 past Gainesville, (becomes Hwy. 441) Cornelia, Clarkesville, Toccoa.

Follow Hwy 441 north towards Clayton. Approximately 8 miles after crossing the Tallulah River, you will see Rabun County High School on the right and you will drive under a new bridge over the highway. The second left past the high school is the Tiger Connector. Look for GOATS ON THE ROOF - a rustic store with wonderful fresh produce and flowers - and yes, with real goats grazing on the roof. Turn left there onto the Tiger Connector.

Go to the flashing red light (Tiger Food Mart, Post Office) and turn right (north) on Old Highway 441.

Vineyards and winery - purple shutters and yellow awnings - are less than a mile up the road on the left. (Winery is 10 minutes south of Clayton.)
