Classic South Lake Country Area Article

The Classic South Lake Country Tourist Guide can help you plan your visit so that your experience is complete and enjoyable. There is something magical about a lake that takes you far from the madding crowd and gives you a sense of serenity like none other. So a Classic South lake country vacation is just what any sane doctor would order to give you a well deserved respite from the rat race and all related stress factors. Now you really don't have to wait for doctor's orders to drive down to this perfect spot in Georgia. The lakes in question here would be Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee around which have grown tourist's havens that leave nothing to the imagination. It is all there for you to indulge; nature, history, culture, activities on land and water, entertainments, great cuisine, and friendly service. Even the most picky tourist would be appeased by all that man and nature have put together to enchant and captivate.

A good place to begin would have to be Springs Park where the two lakes meet. Here you can pitch camp and indulge in fishing, boating, swimming, hiking , trekking, tennis or even go golfing at the several world class golf courses that abound. Or just lie back and commune with nature at your own pace. Reynolds Plantation is a wildlife preserve on Lake Oconee that you may want to explore. You might enjoy a visit to the Historic Scull Shoals Mills Village which was home to Georgia's first Paper Mill, Water-powered Sawmill, Grist Mill and Textile Mill. This is located in the Oconee National Forest and is a ghost town awaiting exploration. While at Lake Oconee, you may want to try your hand at duck hunting if you fancy yourself a good shot. But do ensure you are licensed to do so by checking with the local Department of Natural Resources.

No classic south lake country tourist may leave without exploring Greensboro and Green County. On East Green Street in Greensboro is located the impressive Old Gaol, constructed in 1807 and similar in design to the infamous Bastille of Paris. It is a rather impressive structure made entirely of rock, but you can only visit by appointment. While you are at it make another appointment to visit the Historical Museum of Greene County located on the same street. You can go on drive by tours to the Hawthorne Heights Historic Home and Jefferson Hall both of which are imposing examples of stately architecture. In Hancock County you have the Millimore Gristmill which is not as mundane as it sounds, since it was the site of a historic peace treaty with the Creek Indians in 1786. There's also the splendid County Courthouse in Sparta, embodying the Second Empire architectural style and the Glen Mary, a raised cottage in Greek revival style. Since there is so much to do, be sure to use our “Flag This” feature in the Classic South Lake Country Tourist Guide to add items of interest to your “My Travel Ideas” folder, so that you will not have to remember them and can quickly retrieve them.

Be sure to explore the “Cultural” option on the Classic South Lake Country Tourist Guide to discover all of the great cultural sites, exhibits and activities. After the hiking and trekking trails you may want to hit the antiquing trail which is an integral part of the Georgian Lake Country culture. There are over 200 antiques shops in the Lake Country area and you can be assured of a good deal since you have such a variety at your disposal. It would be wise not to make your purchase at the first opportunity, but wait a bit longer and confirm your choice as well as the price by checking around a bit.

There are also a good number of impressive museums and art galleries in the area such as the Magnolia Art Gallery, Greene County Historical Society Museum, Stephen Thomas Museum and Archives, and Bruce Weiner Micro Car Museum to name only a few. You may find it convenient to pick your favorites from a classic south lake country guide. Now what literary minded person wouldn't give a right arm and a leg to know that this is the home of Alice Walker of The Color Purple, and Flannery O' Connor a literary luminary of the late 19th century? O'Connor's farm, The Andalusia is a must see for lovers of literature. This is where a tourist guide would certainly come in handy, for they contain snippets that can turn an ordinary trip into a memorable vacation.

A variety of local events add spice to your vacation if you are there at the right time. Some of these such as the Gourmet Melodies, Old Fashioned Fun Day at the Recreation Department, Union Point Rodeo, Bonnets and Blooms are not to be missed.
